The New Punctuation

Conceived in 2020, this experiment was a satirical response to the chaos of that year and how it might be expressed typographically.

“There are times in the history of our civilization which require the development and deployment of new or enhanced means of communications. Just as Gutenberg’s press gave way to the dissemination of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses, a revolution in the way we punctuate our words is needed in an age of increasing uncertainty, in which misinterpretation born of echo chambers and confirmation bias leads to outsized animosity.”

Automated Originality

This project is based on the question of whether valuable, worthwhile, and most importantly, beautiful art can be created in a way that is automated yet which yields unique works.

64 characters of 18 fonts (+ 4 ampersands) are placed randomly, while each of the 1,156 cells is colored with a random hexadecimal value, as well as an overlay that sits above the layout to give tone. The total number of possibilities is 376,145,000,000,000,000,000.
